A forum as architecture

On 26 August 2026, at Energiepark Grischa in Chur, more than 130 people from over 70 organizations spent a day inside a format that had not existed before. This case documents what was designed, what the design produced, and what it cost.

What was built

Nine thematic paths — six on the energy of today, three on the technologies of tomorrow — ran in three parallel rooms across three rounds. Fifteen houses carried them, alongside three exhibitors. Nothing was presented from a stage against slides: each path was played out at real installations, on an operating site.

The design decision

The decisive choice was not the programme. It was who sat in the room. The makers were simultaneously the audience. Whoever carried a path was, an hour later, sitting in someone else’s session. Of the session seats held by makers, only a minority fell to their own path.

This is the OIMNLM principle made physical. Each path is a nucleus with its own logic, constraints, and incentives. None was asked to converge with another. What was designed instead were the interfaces — the conditions under which knowledge and responsibility could move between nuclei without dissolving them.

The interface

Every session closed with the same question: “What did you build — and what did not work?” An audience that has built things itself can ask that question, and can hear the answer. The question was not a moderation device; it was the mechanism by which the nuclei exchanged something of substance rather than something promotional.

In the evening, the nine paths were brought together, each represented by one maker. Nine separate routes became one picture — orchestration, not merger.

The commitment: Der Handschlag von Chur

At the exit hung an empty sheet. Whoever wished recorded a commitment: what they would carry forward over the following twelve months. Not for their company — for themselves. In August 2027 each of them will be asked what became of it.

This is longitudinal observation in the sense described under Researcher: a defined cohort, a fixed follow-up date, and a question posed before the answer can be known.

What the model costs

A case is only a case if it names the price. An architecture built on voluntary contribution resists advance commitment. Coherence organizes a room; it does not settle terms. Where value is created through orchestration rather than authority, the question of what each participant owes tends to be answered after the fact — or not at all.

The 2026 edition made this visible. The format worked; the settlement had to be redesigned around it rather than assumed. That redesign — measuring the value each participant actually took out before invoicing rather than after — is itself an application of the research method: structured self-assessment, a small number of questions, and a decision that follows the measurement instead of preceding it.

The next edition is set for 25 August 2027, again at Energiepark Grischa. Whether it takes place is not a matter of intent but of evidence: the outcome of the take-out measurement decides. zukunfts-energie.ch
